Team Squig Introduction

The founder, owner and driver of Team Squig is Squig. Squig is an engineering production manager at Marten Spars and a qualified fitter and turner (which as you'll see later comes in very handy). Squig and his partner Tanya live in rural South Auckland on a quiet lifestyle block with their three sons Devin, Zachary and Hunter, a far extreme from the hectic and noisy drag strip.

Hot Rodding and drag racing started back in the early eighties for Squig when he was an impressionable 15 year old. Squig latched on to a few local Auckalnd rodders who are still quite well known in the rodding scene today. People like Noel Sheehan, Dave Grahame, Gary Child, Bob Armstrong and Rick Purcell (Twitch) to name a few. It was from these rodders that he got the name 'Squig' and it stuck.

At 16 Squig became a member of the Pukekohe Hot Rod Club and worked as a 'pit runner' at Meremere Dragway until 18, when he drifted away from rodding and racing for a few years. During this time away and still interested in American and Aussie cars Squig bought a XP Falcon (4 door) with a heavy breathing 170 pursuit engine. The Falcon kept the 6 for a few more years until enough money could be saved to build up a 302 and C4 which went in around 1990.

At this stage Squig and Tanya belonged to the Early Falcon and Farlane Club (of which Alistair and P.C of Petrolhead were key members), the club held many runs, the most siqnificant to the formation of Team Squig of which was a run at Meremere Dragway. Well Squig gave it ago in the Falcon. With the standard 302 and stock rear diff the Falcon ran a 15.7s at 94mph, Squig was Hooked!!!

Six months later the engine was out and in went a new cam and pistons, a little port matching followed by a shift kitted C4 and a 9 inch diff with a 4 spider 3.5 head. These changes resulted in an instant 14.6s at 97mph on the first run. Squig continued to race the Falcon unchanged for another a year or two at street meets and competion meets in the DYO class (Dial Your Own). Then Squig got the urge to go faster, as you do.
